Division 1: School BFFs
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, Rory is a horrible friend. Having spent so much time with her mother, who is biologically required to love her unconditionally, she’s never had to learn how to properly reciprocate friendship.
Coco does make some excellent points about her relationship with Paris, however, proving that if confronted with an assault of intense friendship she may step up to the plate. That is not the case with Lane.
I imagine Lane felt some relief when Rory transferred to Chilton, so she could stop pretending that they really were best friends. Their relationship morphed into what it truly was: Lane being there for Rory when Rory was available/wanted her friendship, and Lane just enjoying the gossip that Rory had. It’s not a bad friendship, but not a strong one.
Throughout the series, Rory made it abundantly clear that she only had it in her to be there for her mother and her boyfriend. For some women, that’s just all they can give.
She’s the princess
Lane actually had real problems and dreams in her life (unlike Rory), but consistently appeared to enjoy living vicariously through Rory’s more glamorous lifestyle.
But I’ve always thought that Lane had more going on, but just kept that side of herself from Rory (like that time she was a cheerleader) because Rory couldn’t/didn’t care to understand.
As a side note, I hate what the show did to Lane at the end. Having her hate sex, get pregnant on her honeymoon, and carry twins is a really horrible ending for a character that had such potential. They essentially sentenced Lane to a life of abandoning her dreams and living with a man-child husband, twin boys, and her overbearing mother. I second this writer at the Toast who argues she should have had an abortion and live her life to the fullest.
I’ve never seen My So-Called Life, but Angela and Rayanne have got to be better friends than Rory and Lane.
