Lorelai & Sookie (Gilmore Girls) v. Lady Mary & Anna (Downton Abbey)

Division II: Work Friends

5. Lorelai and Sookie v. 12. Lady Mary and Anna

I love these match-ups. Lorelai and Sookie are business partners and truly understand each other.

Anna helped Lady Mary move a corpse across a mansion. You know, normal friend stuff.

But if my humanities training has taught me anything, it’s that you cannot ignore power when understanding relationships. While Lorelai is Sookie’s manager, her authority is really only nominal. And they co-own the Dragonfly.

Lady Mary, on the other hand, is a member of the aristocracy and Anna is a commoner. They live in a society that–although changing–is one that depends on ascribed status. Anna will never be Lady Mary’s equal (especially now that she’s been arrested). They would have never been friendly if Anna didn’t work for Lady Mary. This power dynamic undermines the equal footing necessary for a true friendship.

She’s literally serving Lady Mary.

I’m going to have to go with Lorelai and Sookie on this one.
